When I remix a project that has an icon, should it re-use that icon rather than using a randomly generated one?

sorry for the late response. The short answer is it depends:
It might help to think of it like music, if you remixed a classic hit to make a hot new track, the cover art for that track would usually be a totally new thing.
One thing to consider is how you want people to identify your project when they’re looking at it in the search result. Using the original icon may imply it’s officially associated with or a replacement for the original.
