Why would you want a nofollow link?

Hi there,
Very quick question! What is the point of using rel="nofollow" when using HTML links? I have done some research and having more followable links helps your SEO, so why not have it? Many people say that this is for user-generated content, but why? Aren’t they helping your SEO? It’s just confusing me a bit

Looks like links without rel="nofollow" also get some fancy SEO points as well as the site they are on. So people add their own URLs to comments to get higher up the search rankings. Therefore, site owners add rel="nofollow" so other people websites they may link don’t benefit from the owner’s website and own SEO. If some one wants to clarify this, that’d be great!
